Annual Tonnage per Household

McElvaney's Waste & Recycling were the first company in Ireland to introduce the Pay-by-Weight system. A microchip is fitted to each Wheelie bin and a computer system on each refuse truck identifies each bin as it is emptied. A Weight system is also installed on each truck and the bin is weighed on each collection. This weight is then transfered onto the customer per week leading to a perfect system where each household pays only for the weight of waste they dispose off.

As seen in the graph above, the Pay-by-Weight system has had a positive effect on the levels of waste disposed off since its introduction in 2003. A continous decline can been seen in the amount of waste going to landfill, approx 57% from 1,250 Kgs/household/annum to the current level of 540 Kgs/household/annum in 2009.

A further influence on the reduction of waste to lanfdill can be seen in 2009 following the introduction of Brown Wheel Bins for the organic fraction of waste in the towns of Monaghan, Carrickmacross and Castleblayney.

This coupled with the increasing levels of Recycled material produced by households leads to McElvaney's and County Monaghan having one of the highest recycling rates in the Country. This was further improved when the frequency of our recycling collections was doubled by moving to an alternative week collection of Waste & Recycling in 2008.
